Management Techniques for Effectively Operation of an Aqua Feed Mill

Key Learning

Day 1

Aqua Feed Production Process and New Technologies

The course starts with an overview of the design, layout and production flow process of feed mill plants and the key machinery and terminology. After discussing the impact of production planning and formulations on mill productivity, there is an introduction to automation and Industry 4.0 and how technology is already impacting the way Aqua feed is produced today and is likely to in the future.

The afternoon session commences with raw material storage and handling including bin design and management of grains in external silos. It is followed by preparation and management of premix and hand additives and technologies that provide complete traceability and security for prevention of human errors.

The day concludes with a discussion on factors affecting energy usage and costs and methods of monitoring and managing energy consumption.

  • Aqua Feed Mill Layout and Machinery

  • Production Planning & Formulations

  • Feed Mill Process Automation and Industry 4.0 Technology

  • Energy Management

Day 2

Aqua Feed Consistency and Accuracy

The fundamentals of the aqua feed milling process start with course and fine grinding, batching, weighing and mixing. These process steps determine to a large extent how efficiently, effectively and accurately raw material are converted to feeds. This will cover the importance of particle size reduction, the different methods of grinding and their relative merits and efficiencies. In batching and weighing the focus is on the parameters that determine the speed and accuracy of the process and how these can be optimized. Finally the mixing section highlights the merits of different types of mixers, dry and wet mixing times and the factors that impact homogeneity and carryover.

In the afternoon the focus is on the principles of steam production, steam quality and steam transportation systems and their impact on the conditioning, pelleting and post conditioning for shrimp feeds.

Day 4

The fundamentals of Extrusion and Drying

The morning starts with a discussion on the impact of raw materials and nutritional factors on the production of floating and sinking feeds. This is followed by a detailed look at the principles of extrusion, and the correct set up of extruders and associated equipment. The final morning session is devoted to the drying process, the different types of drying machines and the impact on set up and control on final finished feed quality.

The opening session after lunch is discussion about cooling and some exciting new technology for control of the factors that effect final feed moisture levels. After cooling, the correct set up of crumblers and sieves is covered with the objective of minimising the quantity of fines returns and non-conforming product. The process continues with a look at post process liquid application systems through to packing and bulk loading. The day concludes with discussion about the importance of moisture, its measurement and control as a processing aid as well as for the management of stock loss, reprocess and product shelf life.

  • Raw Material and nutritional factors impacting floating and sinking pellet quality

  • Extrusion: Types of Extruder, Extrusion Process and operation

  • Drying: Principles of Drying, Types of dryer, Troubleshooting

  • Cooling / Crumbling and Sieving

  • Post Process Liquid Applications
